PLANTS / PERSONS

I have always had an intimate relationship with houseplants. I grew up with them in my nursery as a child, and they have continued to be a presence in my life since. When I made the choice to care for my own houseplants as a teenager, I thought it would simply be a hobby, or that the plants would die. I didn’t anticipate forming relationships with the plants themselves. I began to notice that these living beings that I let share my intimate spaces had an effect on everyday life in ways much greater than I had expected. I began to wonder if these plants could have greater processes and systems happening within themselves, without my knowledge. I began to research this topic and soon found that writings by the philosopher Michael Marder, and artist Heidi Norton would become valuable resources for my journey.

The response to this research is presented in the form of imagery of plants and people existing together, manipulated in a way that brings the two entities closer, and in some cases, even merges them together. In addition to the designs that depict these ideas visually, the actual research is presented to the viewer as well – Michael Marder’s Plant-Soul: The Elusive Meanings of Vegetative Life. With both the research and my take on it existing side by side in a shared space with both houseplants and humans, I can only hope that people are able to find a way to better understand themselves as plants and themselves as persons and how we can relate to one another.

As my research on the topic of plants takes me further into the magic that is metaphysics and the philosophy of identity, self, and plant life, I am finding the line between plants and people becoming ever fainter. This research and my constant internal dialogue blurs what I thought I knew about plants completely and is making me ask myself questions that previously I had never even considered to be within the realm of possibility.
The compilation of research and design that is Plants/Persons, has helped me to process the theories and teachings, both ancient and contemporary.
